Montreal fest low on U.S. pics

MONTREAL -- The 35th Montreal World Film Festival, which kicks off Thursday with the world preem of Quebec helmer Andre Forcier's "Coteau Rouge," will be short on Hollywood stars and American films. New York-based filmmakers Stephanie Levy and Joel Fendelman's "David" is the lone U.S. film in the World Competition, the centerpiece of the fest. The film, co-written and directed by Fendelman and exec-produced by Levy, is about a Muslim boy in the Bay Ridge area of Brooklyn who befriends a group of Jewish boys at the local yeshiva. "Early on, I said 'We have to do the Montreal World Film Festival because Montreal is the ultimate melting pot,' " said Levy, who hails from the city. The World Competition also includes French director Emmanuel Mouret's "L'Art d'aimer," which stars Francois Cluzet, Julie Depardieu and Judith Godreche. There is quite the Gallic flavor to the fest, only natural for an event taking place in Canada's largest French-speaking city. French screen icon Catherine Deneuve will be in town to pick up a lifetime achievement award, helmer Claude Lelouch will give a master class, and Bertrand Tavernier, who was at the fest with two films last year, will introduce some of his favorite obscure French and American pics. There are two made-in-Quebec films in the World Competition -- Forcier's "Coteau rouge," about a shady real-estate developer and an ex-boxer, and Montreal helmer Demian Fuica's "La Run," about a man who decides to break into the drug trade. But the fest continues to miss out on many of the top Quebec titles of the season, with A-list pics including Philippe Falardeau's "Monsieur Lazhar," which won two prizes in Locarno, and Jean-Marc Vallee's "Cafe de Flore" both heading to the Toronto Film Festival. About That Time Taylor Lautner and Gus Van Sant Stopped by Cirque Du Soleil

Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant was once in the running to helm The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn before Bill Condon got the gig, but a July dinner outing with Taylor Lautner and Milk writer Dustin Lance Black had the gossip mill wondering if Van Sant was working on a new film with the Twilight star. This weekend the director and the erstwhile wolf boy were photographed taking in Cirque du Soleil’s IRIS: A Journey Through the World of Cinema. What could Gus ‘n’ Tay-Tay have been talking about? The backstage picture was posted to the show’s Facebook page with the following explanation: “Twilight’s Taylor Lautner and Academy Award winning Director Gus Van Sant attended the 8 pm performance of IRIS - A Journey Through The World of Cinema last night at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles (Sat, Aug 13). Guests of IRIS Music Composer Danny Elfman, the duo went backstage to meet the cast of IRIS following the performance.” After his July photo op with Van Sant and Black, Lautner played coy when asked if the trio were working on something together: “They are two talented men,” he told MTV. “You’ll see.” Our pals at Hollywood Life speculated that Van Sant and Lautner may be involved in a film adaptation of Green Day’s American Idiot, which Black is scripting, although there’s been no confirmation yet of any collaboration between the three. Which brings us to Cirque du Soleil: Could the hypothetical Van Sant-Lautner-Black collaboration have anything to do with face-painted acrobats, or perhaps composer Danny Elfman? Work in your finest speculative guesses in today’s round of “Caption This” below. [IRIS on Facebook via TwiFans]

New British Law Invites A-List Hollywood Talent to Live in England

Today in potentially ill-timed legislative news: England’s Tier 1 visa law — which allows for “exceptional talent” to fast-track their way through the country’s stringent immigration procedures en route to earning British citizenship — goes into effect. More details on the celeb-baiting measure after the jump. Britain’s Tier 1 Exceptional Talent measure allows for leaders or potential leaders in the fields of science, humanities, engineering and arts to immigrate more easily to the U.K. than previous visa laws allowed. As The Hollywood Reporter puts it, the arts category targets filmmakers and actors who have at least one major award on their mantlepiece already, or those who have been nominated in recent years: To be eligible, applicants must have won an Academy Award, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe or an Emmy Award or have been nominated in the five years before applying. The government has set aside 300 spots for anyone who meets the requirements. One of the potential upsides to this new law is that British producers will have an easier time casting American stars for their film productions; applicants granted Tier 1 status can work without a sponsor. Meanwhile, England is concurrently trying to reduce immigration numbers for non-Oscar nominee types, attempting to narrow net immigration to “tens of thousands.” A thousand spaces in total have been reserved for the Tier 1 program, so if you’re an Oscar/Emmy/Golden Globe winner, get packing. Arnold Schwarzeneggers Stogie At Austrian Airport terminal Might Get Him Into Legal Trouble

FIRST Released: August 9, 2011 2:04 PM EDT VIENNA, Austria -- Was it lit or was it cold? The status of the cigar in Arnold Schwarzeneggers mouth in an Austrian airport terminal could decide whether he faces law suit. Smoking at international airports is banned in Austria as well as an anti-smoking lobby stated Tuesday it intends to launch a suit from the former California governor for puffing on the stogie after coming in June at Salzburg Airport terminal. But authorities suggest the affair goes up in smoke. Salzburg municipal legal expert Josef Goldberger told condition broadcaster ORF that Arnie can ignore any demands from government bodies in the homeland to reply because the charge isn't included in treaties. Airport terminal spokesperson Alexander Klaus, meanwhile, states the cigar was out. Burning cigars smoke and there have been no puffs for Schwarzenegger, he states. Copyright 2011 by Connected Press. Jane Lynch, Mark Burnett Get Ready For The Emmys

By Jolie LashBEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Jane Lynch helped Jimmy Fallon open the Emmys last year as her iconic Glee character, Sue Sylvester, but dont expect the McKinley High cheerleading coach to have a big presence as the actress hosts the awards show on Sunday, September 18. I think a little bit of Sue Sylvester goes a long way, Lynch told reporters at the Emmy Awards panel as part of the FOX presentation day at the Television Critics Association Summer Session in Beverly Hills on Friday. Theres some ideas out there for Sue Sylvester, but I think well probably leave her tracksuit on the Paramount lot. If theres any nod to Sue it will be very minor, because a little bit of Sue goes a long way, Emmys Executive Producer Mark Burnett added, echoing Lynchs words. Lynch said shes open to doing anything that works when it comes to hosting the Emmys, but she probably wont head down the path Ricky Gervais took at the most recent Golden Globes. I really enjoyed Ricky Gervais, but when you hire him this is the guy that youre hiring, she said. I think that my sensibility and Marks and [one of our writers] we kind of line up there. We dont have that kind of snarky-ness that Ricky has, but I am a huge fan of it. I laughed many times at the Golden Globes. Plans are still taking shape for the Emmys and the Glee star said shes heading into her hosting gig with a cocktail of excitement, anticipation and abject fear. I started out in theater and thats the high being in that place and actually harnessing that energy into good, she said. I think a lot of it is being present in the moment and saying yes to everything. You have no Take 2 I enjoy that, I almost seek out that thrill of that kind of cocktail. While Lynch hopes to keep things moving on stage, should an award winner have a long-winded speech, Burnett, as the executive producer, is already thinking of ways the show can cope, time wise, he told Access Hollywood after the panel. I dont want to [use] play off music, but I want to get people off stage so Ive got other ideas, he said. Remember, at the [MTV] Movie Awards, I had the guy dressed up as Javier Bardem [from] No Country For Old Men with the nail gun? I had the fat naked guy from Borat. He ran on stage and hugged people, Burnett continued. Its not the [MTV] Movie Awards, I cant do those things. Its also network TV and the Emmys so Ive gotta find a balance. This is its a celebration show, Ive gotta find a way to do it. So his advice to actors ready to carry on, and on, and on? Short speeches are always better received, Burnett smiled. Burnett is also planning to make other changes to the show, including with the In Memoriam section. In Memoriam doesnt need to be a bummer, he said during the panel. Its still there, but I want to look at it as a raise up, not a bring down. After the panel, in a response to a question from Access Hollywood, Burnett told a small group of reporters that he wants to change the section around to make it more celebratory. I may have said it in a blunt way and I dont mean to be offensive, he said, referring to calling the In Memoriam section a bummer. Theres a way to look at death as a celebration, I think, especially when people who died actually did work In this case the visual arts, so you can celebrate the work. While most awards shows get criticism for those late stars left out of the In Memoriam section, Burnett said this years Emmys will fit in who they can, based on the impact they made during their lifetime. Theres no way to fit everybody in. Were a TV show Theres only so much time So the people that left the most lingering work will get longer like Columbo, he added, referring to the late Peter Falk. The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Sunday, September 18 at 8 PM ET/5PM PT on FOX. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc.
